Traveling with your pet by automobile this summer? Perhaps you will be going out on a boat and bringing Fido along to have fun on the water as well. You might even be planning to stay home and lounge around the swimming pool. While some dogs are water dogs and are genetic swimmers, most others have to be taught just as we do. Not only do we want to keep him safe on a boat he needs to be kept safe in any vehicle. Have you any idea how many dangers Fido faces in a moving car? And he is not any safer in a hot locked parked car. With some thoughts and preparations we can plan on having a safe fun summer with our four legged best friends.

Hot summers can be very dangerous times for your pets. We don’t want to spoil our fun with unexpected emergencies and, as we care so very much for our pets, we don’t want them to get sick. Pets can get heat stroke just as their humans can. Never leave your pet in a locked car on a hot summer day (or even on a mild spring or fall day). Even with the windows open a little, cars heat up quickly, even on cooler days. Parked cars are dangerous places for your pets. We cannot say this often enough–Do not leave your pet in a locked car even for a little while. (In the event you see pets or children in locked cars on hot days please call the police immediately. You may very well save a life.) Heat stroke is often fatal.

Keep your pet as cool and as comfortable as possible during the hot weather. Make sure that he has a shady place available all day. He should have plenty of fresh clean water at all times in a sturdy dish that he can’t upset. An automatic pet water dish is ideal. If you are traveling, always bring along a collapsible drinking bowl so your pet can have a cool drink when needed. It is also a good idea to bring along his travel bowl and a bottle of water for your daily walks. You bring a bottle of water for yourself, don’t you? Fido deserves one as well.

Not all dogs are natural swimmers and many need to learn. Even if he is a fine swimmer, there could be choppy seas or unexpected storms and he would be in grave danger if he fell off the boat (or even into your swimming pool). Train you dog to know where to find the swimming pool steps. Many fine life jackets are now made for dogs of all sizes and should be worn when around water.

When you travel with your dog by automobile do not let your pet stick his head out the window. His eyes could be damaged by foreign objects and the wind can cause ear problems. There are numerous types of car safety seats and tethers for canines of all breeds and sizes. Your pets can travel as safely as your children can. You can get a special first aid kit for your pet which you can keep right next to the family first aid kit. Your pet is part of the family as well.

Proper license and identification tags must be worn by your pets at all times. Hundreds of dogs manage to get lost during the summer months. ID tags help them find their families.

For a happy summer with our dogs we need to:

  • Prevent heat stroke.
  • Prevent drowning and other accidents.
  • Provide plenty of fresh cool drinking water.
  • Provide canine car safety seat or safety harness for vehicles.
  • Always have ID tags on pets.
